Putting my money where my mouth is.*

I joined Amnesty International today, and I encourage you to do likewise.

My contribution will not keep torture from being enshrined into law, nor will it guarantee habeas corpus protections. The bit of cash I forked over won't keep someone from being waterboarded, cold-roomed or sexually abused in the name of national security.

But it's a hell of a lot better than doing nothing.

* One of my favorite colloquialisms. Ours is a deeply flawed nation (with the capacity for greatness), but we definitely have a way with language.

Some days, it just doesn't pay to get out of bed.

I just spent the last five minutes at the sink flushing finely powdered cat litter out of my nose.

And this was one of today's lighter moments.

"1984"

When I don't sleep well, I wake up with a vivid recall of my dreams.

After less than five hours' sleep, I grogged out of bed and immediately started mulling over this tableaux:

I'm at work, in a bright corner office with glass walls, walking one of the Big Bosses through a presentation on my iBook. The screensaver starts up during a lull: random photos of Christmas Past float and dissolve over a soft audio bed, Ken Burns-style.

"What's that music?" she asks.

"Bowie, Diamond Dogs," I reply.

She leans forward and taps the volume key until sound fills her office: overlapping percussion, 70s disco strings, glam production values.

The Big Boss pushes up from the conference table and starts to dance -- as soon as she starts to move, she's about 22 years younger and some of the flintiness falls away.

I stand to join her, and suddenly, I'm 15 years old.

Wake me when the revolution comes.

I've been working and socializing in them for a few months, but tonight was the first time I've worn my orange Italian sneakers to the gym.
